Project Description

The GCOOS Team creates a centralized web portal which merge a variety of data streams and products related to beach environmental quality and safety for several popular beaches located along the U.S. Gulf of Mexico coast as a demonstration of the value of such information to the beach-going public.

At present, various unrelated websites provide information which affect the quality and safety of a beachgoer's experience. These include: monitoring for bacteria, Harmful Algal Blooms, beach environmental parameters (winds, waves, UV indices, currents and rip currents) and freshwater discharges from nearby rivers and municipal sources which can affect water quality and clarity. The portal merge step by step: near real-time sources of observations with numerical model forecasts of coastal currents and contemporaneous social media feeds to assess and report the current state of beach quality.
